Royal Mental Health Centre Projects

Typography and Print Design

Overview During my placement at the Royal Mental Health Centre, I had the unique opportunity to contribute to their communications team by focusing on typography and print design. My role involved creating and refining various printed materials, ensuring that they effectively communicated the Centre’s message while maintaining a professional and cohesive visual identity.

Project Scope Throughout my time at the Centre, I worked on a diverse range of projects. I designed informational brochures detailing the Centre’s services and programs, developed engaging monthly newsletters for patients, staff, and stakeholders, and crafted templates for patient communication letters. Additionally, I created eye-catching event posters that promoted various initiatives. Each project required a balance of clear and accessible typography with visually appealing layouts, tailored to enhance the readability and impact of the Centre's communications.

Branding and GuidelinesIn all my design work, I adhered strictly to the Royal Mental Health Centre’s branding guidelines. This included:
Logo Usage: Ensuring the Centre's logo was prominently and correctly displayed on all materials, following the prescribed size, placement, and spacing requirements.
Colour Palette: Utilizing the Centre’s official colour palette to maintain brand consistency and evoke the intended emotional response from the audience.
Typography Standards: Applying the Centre’s chosen fonts and typographic styles to create a cohesive look and feel across all communications.
Visual Consistency: Integrating other brand elements, such as icons and imagery, in a manner that aligns with the Centre’s visual identity.

Design Philosophy The design work at the Royal Mental Health Centre was driven by a commitment to clarity and empathy. Given the sensitive nature of the Centre’s work, it was crucial that all printed materials were not only aesthetically pleasing but also easy to understand and comforting to the audience.Key aspects of my design approach included:
Clarity and Legibility: Ensuring text was readable and accessible, with careful attention to font choice, size, and spacing.
Consistency: Maintaining a unified look across all materials to strengthen brand recognition and trust.
Sensitivity: Choosing colours, images, and typefaces that conveyed a sense of care and support appropriate for the mental health context.

Impact and Reflection My placement at the Royal Mental Health Centre provided invaluable experience in applying typography and print design to real-world needs. It was incredibly rewarding to see my work contribute to the Centre’s mission of supporting mental health and well-being. This experience has deepened my appreciation for how design can play a critical role in communication and community support.
